Do I Need A Level Physics Tuition? Here Are 5 Signs That Would Indicate YES!

Do I Need A Level Physics Tuition? Here Are 5 Signs That Would Indicate YES!

Do I Need A Level Physics Tuition? Here Are 5 Signs That Would Indicate YES!

Now that it is March, we are almost at the end of the first quarter of the year. For JC1 and JC2 students, that also means you are that much closer to your big milestone – the A’ Level examinations.

The first few months transiting into a new schooling environment might have been intimidating for some of you! Especially when it involves adjusting to an entirely new routine, new teachers, classmates, and an even tougher syllabus – particularly so for complex subjects like Physics.

After the first 3 months of settling in, are you now entertaining thoughts that you might need tuition at this point? Do not be shy! Getting help early is a much better idea than doing it too last minute and close to the exams!

If you are still uncertain, take a look at the 5 simple signs that would suggest you do!

You Did Not Do Well For O’ Level Physics

If this was the case for you, in the first three months you might have found yourself struggling with the topics in school.

Why so? The A ‘Level Physics syllabus builds on what you learned and studied in secondary school. If you did not have a good foundation for the core topics then, it would make it harder now to catch up with the harder and more complex topics in junior college.

Want to do better? Make sure you get your fundamentals right from the start – trust us, it will only get harder in year 2!

Are You Struggling with New Physics Syllabus in Junior College?

Did well in your O’Level exams yet find yourself struggling with the new concepts being taught in school? Do not worry. You are not alone.

The reality is that the H2 physics syllabus has both a much wider breadth (covers more topics like thermodynamics, quantum physics, and nuclear physics not taught previously) and goes deeper per topic (meaning more theories, formulas, and explanations in greater detail) compared to your pure physics syllabus in secondary school.

And also, not to mention the increased mathematical applications for the subject!

That is why, while a good foundation in O’Level Math and Physics is essential, there is still much more diligence and continual hard work required to master the complexity of A’ Level Physics.

Are You Working Hard but Not Seeing Any Results?

If you are spending a lot of effort on the subject but not seeing any results, something must be going wrong. But what?

Whether you are struggling to comprehend the concepts or finding it difficult to apply theories and formulas to the questions asked, it is a sign that self-help is not enough.

When it comes to breaking down tough concepts and understanding theories, professional help in the form of experience A ‘Level Physics tuition teachers can help you maximize your efforts!

Instead of going around in circles yourself, a trained teacher can help dissect, explain difficult topics, and train you in proper examination answering techniques.

Avoiding the Topic Like the Plague?

This is quite common behaviour amongst students who have lost confidence in the subject – where the idea of just sitting down to study it makes you feel that it is too tough to conquer and why to waste the effort.

If you are feeling so incredibly demotivated on the subject it is time to consider external help! Going about studying Physics the right way, with the help of a tuition teacher can help make things more fun, easy to comprehend, and overall a more enjoyable learning experience.

Thinking of Dropping Your H2 Physics to H1?

Think that H2 physics is too tough for you and want to consider dropping it to H1?

While that is a way to solve your problems temporarily, you may want to consider that H2 physics tends to be an essential entry requirement for particular university courses. If you were to opt to drop your physics to H1, you may not be able to enter courses that you like in university like the following:

• Sciences
• Engineering
• Mathematics
• And many more

Instead, why not work smart to improve your learning for the subject with the help of external guidance? This way you will do well and also have the upper hand when it comes to choosing from a wider variety of courses in the future.

Applying for University? Common FAQs & Tips You Should Know!

Are you a JC student interested in planning ahead for your next academic milestone? Good on you! It is always good to know what you are getting yourself into! Especially when University applications come with a whole litany of new complex terms, subject and grade pre-requisites and more!

Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t be! Let us help you breakdown some of the most common FAQ JC students have about applying for university – with a few bonus tips that can come in handy!

What Universities can I Apply to in Singapore?

Well, compared to JC students who graduated a decade ago, students today have more tertiary institution options with even specialized niche institutions to choose from these days

University Types of Undergraduate Courses They Offer
National University of Singapore (NUS) One of the more comprehensive local universities, NUS offers a wide range of courses from Arts & Social Sciences, Business, Computing, Design & Environment, Engineering, Public Policy and more.

They are also one of the earliest established universities to offer Law, Architecture, Medicine and Dentistry.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Similar to NUS, NTU is another long-standing local university, offering an equally wide range of courses from Accountancy and Business, Art, Design & Media, Communication Studies, Engineering, Humanities, Medicine, Social Sciences, Sports Science and more.

They are also the main university to offer Education courses – specially the NIE undergraduate programme which is the key course for aspiring teachers.

Singapore Management University (SMU) As the third local university to be established, SMU chose to differentiate with its focus on 8 undergraduate programs revolving around business and computing – includes accountancy, business management, economics, information systems, law, and social science.
Singapore University of Technological Design (SUTD) One of the niche public universities in Singapore, SUTD’s curriculum is primarily design centric. Its undergraduate programmes include architecture and sustainable design, design and artificial intelligence, engineering systems and design and more.
Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) As the name suggests, SUSS is also another more niche public university in Singapore with programmes that have a stronger focus on social impact. Some of their courses include early childhood education, public safety and security, human resource management, social work and more.
Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) One of the niche public university offerings in Singapore, SIT has a wide range of technologically related undergraduate programmes available. From Aerospace engineering, aircraft systems engineering, chemical engineering, computing engineering, computer science in interactive media and game development to food technology and more.
LASALLE College of the Arts and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) More interested in the arts? You can find not one but two specialised arts institutions that offer programmes in the visual arts and performing arts that you can choose for more creative expression.

As you can see from the options available, the sky is the limit when it comes to pursuing a higher education in any field!

What is the Difference Between a Double Degree, Double Major and Minors?

Having trouble with the new terminology? Here is a simple breakdown of what these common terms mean:

Double degree: A double degree means you will graduate with two degrees. For instance, a double degree in Business & Computer Engineering will give you two degrees upon graduation – each for the respective programme that you underwent.

Typically, double degrees are useful in giving you more versatility in career options in the future and not to mention an edge over someone who have only a single degree in either programmes.

The downside? You take slightly longer – usually 1-2 years more compared to single degree undergraduates.

Double major: Unlike a double degree, a double major will only result in one degree upon graduation. A major is another term for specialization, so a double major would mean you have 2 specializations for your degree.

For example, a Mathematical Sciences student could have a double major in both Mathematical Sciences and Computer Sciences – meaning they will focus on these two main areas of studies, compared to a single major Mathematical Sciences student who would only focus on one main area of studies.

Like the double degree, it gives you more exposure to different career opportunities, but at a lesser intensity and time taken – you will graduate within the normal timespan required for a single degree.

Minor: A minor, compared to a major, is a less intensive specialization in a particular area of interest. It is usually if you have special interest in a topic of study, but since the workload and time spent on it is not nearly as much as a major, you will probably be only scrapping the tip of the iceberg.

Usually this might be useful if you are not entirely sure about your interest in a particular field of study.

What are Subject Pre-requisites?

This is one of the most important aspects to consider when choosing a course. Apart from your personal interest, school fees, subject pre-requisites are one of the key barriers to entry into any particular course.

Depending on your choice of course, there could be lenient or strict subject requirements for entry into the course. This is to ensure that you have the necessary foundation for studying even more complex topics in those subjects.

Every course has different pre-requisites and may even differ across universities, so do make sure you do your homework before applying.

For example, for Medicine courses, you will need a minimum of ‘A-level pass’ in Chemistry and either Biology or Physics.

However, do note that pre-requisites are simply basic requirements to even apply, and not a guarantee that you can get a slot in the programme.

How to Know If My Grades Can Make the Cut?

Simply google for “Indicative Grade Profile” of the university you are applying to and check the grades of the students that got admitted the previous year.

While this may not be the most accurate indication for your year’s intake, it is one of the best indicators available. A good comparison would be the indicative “cut-off” points when you were applying for secondary school with PSLE grades.

How to Ace JC Maths – Study Tips by A Top JC Math Tuition Centre

Congratulations on graduating from yet another milestone in your education journey so far! Now that the O’ Levels is done and dusted, next up – to conquer the next big milestone, the A’ Levels!

When it comes to JC maths, having a good track record in secondary school gives you a good head start but is not nearly enough.

Before we go into the details on how you can ace your JC mid-terms, final exams, and the all-important A’ Levels, let us be clear about just how distinct JC maths is from what you used to learn in secondary school:

O’ Level A Maths Syllabus

A’ Level Maths Syllabus

9 sub-topics: From equations and inequalities to differentiation and integration

Example:

  • Solving simultaneous equations in two variables with at least one linear equation, by substitution
  • Relationships between the roots and coefficients of a quadratic equation
20 sub-topics: From functions to correlation and linear regression. (With assumed knowledge of at least 7 sub-topics from O’ Level Maths syllabus)

Example:

  • concepts of sequence and series for finite and infinite cases
  • sequence as function y = f(n) where n is a positive integer
  • relationship between un (the nth term) and Sn (the sum to n terms)

The jump in critical thinking skills and the ability to grasp new and complex concepts is quite a large one. And what is more? Without a solid fundamental grasp of O’Level Math concepts, you will expect to struggle in JC maths due to the fact that many of the new concepts continue to build on what you had learnt in secondary school.

Enough about the doom and gloom, now on to the practical tips on how you can overcome the odds to score well!

Review, Refresh and Clarify to Make Sure You Understand Concepts

A fool-proof method to ace any subject, including JC maths, is to make sure you understand the concept. Hence, we cannot emphasize more about the importance of reviewing, refreshing, and clarifying to ensure you understand each concept.

Of course, this may sound easier said than done – especially when you do not know where to begin or feel like you do not have enough time.

This is why at New Dawn Learning Studio, we structure our H2 Math Tuition classes in a way to ensure you can fully comprehend even the most complex of topics:

  • H2 Math Lecture to help our students breakdown the new concept or topic and introduce step by step solving methods.
  • Followed by Tutorial Questions to allow students to refresh and apply their newly learnt knowledge in problem-solving.
  • Summary sheets are also provided to help students quickly refer to the essential formula for each topic.
  • Additional Math Camps and Workshops are also available for students who need to catch up on the syllabus or need more revision.

Practice, Practice, And More Practice!

Practice makes perfect. And there is truth in this idiom when it comes to acing A ‘Levels Maths.

Do not get us wrong. While some people practice anticipating possible examination questions, we encourage practising for a different reason – doing many varieties of questions (especially challenging ones) helps you to test your understanding of the concepts learnt.

And this is precisely the reason why we not only go through practice questions in class after the lecture session but also provide homework worksheets with various difficulty levels to test our students’ critical thinking and comprehension of the topic.

If you do not have tuition resources, do consider getting assessment books to review and revise after learning each topic in school.

Schedule Regular Revision to Avoid Last Minute Panic!

Well, avoid procrastinating! Unlike in secondary school where you had 4 years to get ready for the O’ Levels, you have less than 2 years for the A’ Levels – yes that is half the amount of time for twice the number of topics! So do not waste any time getting your revision done!

Top tip from all our successful JC graduates? Period reviews are essential to retaining information about new concepts they learn in school and at tuition classes. Setting aside a few hours each week to go through what was taught in school would be good enough to help keep these concepts fresh in your mind!

Need help with periodic reviews? At the New Dawn Learning Studio, we do cater for periodic reviews every quarterly where we hold workshops to review several topics at a go! These have been extremely popular for our time-crunched JC students!

Bonus: Exam Tips to Take Note Of!

Last but not least, here are some tips to take note of during your quizzes, mid-terms, or final examinations.

  • Allocate time for each section of the paper (for every mark you should not spend more than 1.5 minutes on the question)– this helps you pace yourself during the paper and ensure you can finish the paper within the allocated time.
  • Show all workings for the question (even if you used a calculator) – error carry forward points can save you the pain of losing the marks for an entire question.
  • Visualize the problem by using diagrams, models, or graphs to help you see it in a way you can comprehend.
  • Never leave a question empty
  • Be neat – keep your workings legible (because if the examiner cannot understand your workings, they cannot give you the mark)

Why Secondary Math Tuition Can Help Your Child Build the Right Foundation for O’Levels?

Why Secondary Math Tuition Can Help Your Child Build the Right Foundation for O’Levels?

Why Secondary Math Tuition Can Help Your Child Build the Right Foundation for O’Levels?

4th January has come and passed. And with that, a new cohort of Primary 6 graduates have moved on to their next learning phase – secondary school. This transition has been lamented by Singaporeans parents about how stressful it is for their kids – from keeping up with a lot more subjects, having longer school days, more independent learning, coping with a lot tougher concepts being taught, and more.

With so many variables, parents who plan ahead for this steep transition are keenly aware that external help is required. And that is where secondary math tuition comes in handy in helping new secondary-1 students build the right foundation from the very beginning.

Need more convincing? Read on for 3 simple reasons why secondary maths tuition is a great resource for parents to help their kids transition smoothly from primary to secondary school for this tough and important subject and be O’Level foundation-ready!

  • Primary and Secondary School Maths Syllabus is Vastly Different.

For primary 6 graduates who have been used to 9-10 concepts being taught per year, the significant increase in volume to 20 topics just within the first year of secondary school might seem overwhelming.

And it is not just the volume. The leap in terms of comprehension and problem-solving skills is not small – even while building on from the foundation in primary school.

Primary 6 Math Syllabus

Secondary 1 Math Syllabus

Example:

  • Dividing a proper fraction by a whole number without a calculator
  • Solving word problems involving percentage
  • Solving simple linear equations in a simple context
Example:

  • Translation of simple real-world situations into algebraic expressions
  • Graphs of linear functions
  • Formulating a linear equation in one variable to solve problems

What is more? These are not even the most complex topics they will encounter in secondary school leading up to the O’Levels. Secondary 1 topics are mostly foundation level topics (e.g. algebraic expressions) that will continually be built on in subsequent years all the way to Secondary 4 (e.g. solving for quadratic equations).

How secondary school maths tuition can help?

  • Tuition teachers are subject & syllabus experts who have the experience in helping students keep pace with the learning of even the most challenging new topics

  • Help to Break Down More Difficult Topics in A Guided Approach

In the formal school environment, there have been improvements where the average Pupil-Teacher ratio (PTR) drops from 15:1 (Primary school) to 12:1 (Secondary school). However, with large class sizes which can go up to 40 students, even while the topics are increasing in difficulty and depth – it can still be especially hard for slower students.

Traditional teachers do not have the luxury of accommodating individual learning abilities due to their large class sizes. And the implication? That there will be some students who can keep pace and those who cannot.

How secondary school math tuition can help?

  • At New Dawn Learning Studio, our tuition teachers have the luxury of smaller and more intimate class sizes which help facilitate them attending to specific learning needs and pace.
  • Additionally, every topic comes with curated notes (with step-by-step solutions) that help students in their understanding as well as opportunities to practice and clarify with the tutors.

  • Reinforcement via Consistent Practice

Does your child lack the discipline to practise their work outside of school? Unfortunately, Maths, like any other subject requires reinforcement through practice and revision.

In secondary school there will be even more distractions for them – from CCAs, BGRs, to longer schooling hours. How then can you help to ensure they get the much-needed practice time into their schedule?

How secondary school maths tuition can help?

  • Weekly tuition classes (1.5 hours each) with plenty of in-class practice questions provide consistency in helping students recap and review concepts taught in school.
  • Quarterly workshops serve as timely revision sessions for students who require additional focus.
  • Curated examination papers are prepared to help strengthen, review, and test their knowledge of the concepts and application techniques.

O’Level & A ‘Level: How to Support Your Child Through a Major Exam Year

O’Level & A ‘Level: How to Support Your Child Through a Major Exam Year

O’Level & A ‘Level: How to Support Your Child Through a Major Exam Year

As another new year rolls around, another new cohort of students will be facing a major examination this year. Is that your child this year?

The prospect of taking the O’Level and A ‘Level examinations is a daunting one for many youths, and it is especially so for many Singapore students who suffer from high levels of anxiety when it comes to tests and grades!

Knowing that it will be a stressful year ahead, how can parents help to alleviate some of that stress and provide support for them?

Here are 6 tips to consider:

Manage Your Own Expectations

First and foremost, it is important to get your own expectations in order. Parental expectations are easily one of the top stressors for students.

Being told to “get top grades”, “come in first in class” or “get only straight As” can place unnecessary pressure on your child.

Start by understanding that not every child will be the best at everything. Everyone has their own strengths and weakness. Start by understanding what their strengths and weakness are and calibrate your expectations accordingly.

Help Them Discover Their Strengths and Weakness

This is a good exercise to go through with your child for two simple reasons:

    1. It helps them understand what they need to work on to improve by the end of the year
    2. It gives them an important sense of support from you.

Take the time to go through past years’ examinations, or tests to uncover subjects and topics they are better in and those they might need more help in.
Once uncovered, help them to consider re-adjusting the amount of time and effort required to review and revise those topics – spending more time and resources to build up on the weaker areas.

Ask and Get Them the Help They Need

Have a chat with them about what type of help they might require to achieve their goals for the major exams.

Do they need you to help check their homework? Do they require your help in coming up with a revision plan? Or do they feel like they need external help like tuition on their weaker subjects?

The earlier you do this the more effective it is for them. In fact, it would be ideal to start asking your child this question at the end of every school term, so you can plan ahead to get them the help they need – whether it might be assessment/guidebooks or engaging a tutor for them.

The better prepared they are, the less stress they will face during the exams.

Encourage Good Studying Habits

Encourage them to develop good studying habits throughout the year that can help reduce stress as the exams come around:

  • Don’t revise last-minute – it is hardly effective and causes them to feel even more lethargic
  • Set a studying or revision schedule daily – daily or weekly routines are proven to help students retain their knowledge better and are more productive
  • Set goals for each study session – having a clear goal of what needs to be achieved helps your child to learn better
  • Block out distractions when studying – make it a point to find a place where they won’t be distracted or disturbed while studying to make the most of the session (e.g. make sure their siblings keep quiet during their daily study times)
  • Review work regularly – revision is key to retaining knowledge
  • Practice visualization and breathing techniques to help calm themselves down

Aside from studying, also make sure they keep to a balanced lifestyle that includes sufficient time for rest and play – after all they need some outlets to help relieve all that stress from studying!

Motivate Them

Nonetheless, there is only so much you can do as a parent to encourage and give them external support.

At the end of the day, it is only if they have the intrinsic motivation to perform well that they will work hard to achieve their goals. So how can you help them develop this intrinsic motivation?

  • Discuss the consequences of failure (e.g. retaining another year in school or being unable to get into the school or course of their choice)
  • Discuss their goals for the future and how hard work now can help bring them one step closer

Keep an Open Communication Channel

Last but not least, ensure you communicate and have regular check-ins with them. Help them feel comfortable coming to you if they need to share any worries or stress about the examinations or learning in school.

Having that listening ear is extremely essential in helping students manage their stress. Avoid criticising or getting upset with them during this difficult period since it will only add to their stressors.

How to Cope with Exam Stress: Tips to Survive Any Exam!

How to Cope with Exam Stress: Tips to Survive Any Exam!

How to Cope with Exam Stress: Tips to Survive Any Exam!

Exam stress is real! And you are not alone. A most recent 2020 survey by Focus on the Family Singapore, revealed shockingly that a majority of Singaporean youth (7 of 10 to be exact) are more anxious about taking exams than dealing with the COVID-19 situation.

If you belong to the majority of students who are consistently under exam stress, be it studying for ‘O’ Level or ‘A’ Level examinations and are looking for ways to cope, you are in the right place!

With the help of extensive online research, fellow student validations, and even inputs from our tutors, we have put together an essential list of tips to help any Singaporean student cope with their exams – be it a quarterly weighted assessment, mid-paper, or the all-important end-of-year exams.

Remember to save this link for future reference!

  1. Set Realistic Goals

The first and most important tip is about goal setting – and critically, setting realistic goals.

Many students end up getting overly stressed out by setting overwhelming unattainable goals for themselves at the start of the year. And as the year progresses, feel increasingly stressed when they realize the end goal is getting even further away.

For example, if you failed a particular subject last year, an unrealistic goal would be to score an A for this coming year. A more realistic goal would be perhaps to improve the overall score by [ a reasonable number of marks].

Having a more attainable goal will help you feel motivated towards achieving it rather than procrastinating because you do not think it is possible.

Tip: Break down your long-term goal into smaller goals – for example, to increase your score for each quarterly weighted assessment by 10 marks each time.

  1. Get the Help You Need

If your stress is due to difficulty in understanding concepts or topics, then make sure you get the help you need early on! Do not wait until the day before the paper to clarify your uncertainty.

Depending on how much guidance you require, and urgency to clarify a particular concept, you can choose from plenty of resources out there that can help you better understand the subject:

  • YouTube tutorials – independent learning required
  • Assessment guidebooks – independent learning required
  • Private tuition – guided and structured learning
  • Subject workshops – guided and structured learning
  • And many more

Tip: Do not leave it till the eleventh hour to seek help, it is usually not as effective and does nothing much to help with stress.

  1. Start Revision Early

This is a very practical piece of advice that if adhered to can do wonders – but many students fail to realize its importance, resulting in scrambling to do last-minute revisions which create unnecessary stressors.

Starting revision early – instead of a few days before your examinations – help immensely in reducing anxiety levels for a few simple reasons:

  • Revising early will give you ample time to go through each topic
  • There will not be last-minute surprises about concepts that you find incredibly hard to grasp
  • Have enough time to consult with friends, teachers, or tutors for topics you do not understand
  • Enough time to revise twice – if you start early enough
  • Time to practice mock papers and get used to the type of questions

Doing so helps to build confidence in the subject, which effectively allays any anxiety or fear when it comes to the actual assessment.

Tip: Do up a revision schedule or timetable so you can plan out sufficient time for each topic/ subject.

  1. Find a Conducive Environment to Mug

An unconducive environment can result in distractions, impairing your cognitive ability, which is not effective for helping you retain the information that you are studying.

So, make sure you find a conducive, non-cluttered environment that works well for you. Or even a reliable study partner, should you study better with a peer.

Need some help finding a conducive study spot? Check out our “Guide to The Best Conducive Study Spots in Singapore for Students”!

  1. Get off Your Phone

Speaking of distractions that cause more stress during the exam periods, of course, we have the mobile smartphone on our list. Sleep deficit, anxiety, and stress are common symptoms of high mobile phone usage.

Our tip? Turn off your smartphone, or at the very least reduce your mobile phone usage (especially during late nights) while you mug to help reduce your stress levels!

Need help staying away from those distracting apps and social media? Try out these interesting solutions:

  • AppDetox (Android) – Create rules to control your app usage
  • Flipd (iOs and Android) – Hides social media or gaming apps so you can unplug while you focus on studying
  1. Take breaks

This is something students tend to forget to do when they are in the midst of revision. Taking a break has plenty of benefits:

  • Help to boost brain function
  • Reset focus and improves memory
  • Useful in improving mood and boost motivation
  • Increases productivity
  • Reduces stress

So do not forget to incorporate simple, frequent water or meal breaks in between your mugging sessions to help relieve your stress levels.

  1. Get Enough Sleep, Exercise, and Food

Eating healthily, getting enough exercise and sleep are critical to keeping your body in tip-top condition – and a good way to keep stress at bay. Learn about the science behind it here!

So, make sure you set aside enough time in your revision schedule to incorporate sufficient sleeping hours, exercise breaks, and eating healthy meals!

5 Signs that Your Kid Needs JC Chemistry Tuition

5 Signs that Your Kid Needs JC Chemistry Tuition

5 Signs that Your Kid Needs JC Chemistry Tuition

Why JC Chemistry is a Challenge

The new schooling year is almost upon us once more! For many parents, it also symbolises a new milestone as their kids graduate from secondary school and embark on a new journey in junior college!

The transition from secondary school to junior college is not necessarily the easiest to cope with – with significant changes like a totally new school environment, new classmates from different secondary schools, teachers with new teaching styles, and most dauntingly, a syllabus that is on many levels more demanding and challenging than anything they have experienced before. And this is especially so for a complex topic like Chemistry! At H2 and even H1 levels, most adults would find themselves stumped by the questions.

And for many students, this mismatch in expectation and reality is what results in them turning to tuition as a last-minute resort to doing well for their examinations – which can be sometimes a little too late!

So how can parents identify early on if your kid actually needs JC chemistry tuition and get them the help they need pre-emptively? Here are 5 simple signs you can look out for:

Did Not Do Well for O’Level Chemistry

This is one of the most obvious indicators! The O’Level Chemistry examinations are essentially an objective benchmark to gauge student’s understanding of the concepts learnt. If your kid did not manage to do well for the paper, it is an indication that they have weak fundamentals of the subject.

With the JC Chemistry topics building on top and above those fundamentals, it is likely they will struggle to comprehend the new concepts taught in school.

Struggling to Keep Up with New Topics in School

Doing well for the O’ Levels, however does not necessarily give students a free pass in junior college! As shared in our previous article “Preparing for A-Level H2 Chemistry in 2021”, there are huge differences in the O and A level syllabus – namely almost double the number of topics to cover in half the amount of time.

Many new complex topics like Acid-base equilibrium, Reaction Kinetics, Organic Chemistry (Synthesis and Elucidation) tend to give H2 chemistry students plenty of headaches. So, do not be surprised if your child who did well in secondary school starts to struggle with this subject in JC.

Score Poorly Despite Putting in Effort

In a way, this is linked to the previous sign. If they struggle to keep up with the new topics, it will inevitably lead to poor results in assessments.

Whether they have the wrong understanding of the concepts or are finding it tough to apply the concepts learnt to questions, by the time it reaches this stage, it is a clear sign that external help is required.

Procrastinating or Avoiding Studying the Topic

The lack of confidence in a subject can usually manifest in unusual ways – for example procrastinating or avoiding studying for the subject even though it is something your kid may be weak in.

Why? Revising for something they cannot wrap their head around even though they may spend hours on it is hardly motivating, isn’t it? That is why proper guidance on how to tackle the subject and rebuilding that lost confidence is essential.

Ask to drop to H1

In JC Chemistry, there are 3 levels of difficulty:

  • H1: offers a basic understanding of the H2 syllabus but without the same intensity and no lab work required
  • H2: the most standard level that most students take since it is a basic requirement for many university courses
  • H3: introduces even more complex concepts on top and above the H2 syllabus

If at any point, your kid asks to drop their H2 to H1 for chemistry, that is a massive call for help! While we try to avoid getting to this stage by looking out proactively for signs in the early stages, parents may not always manage to catch all the signs.

Before making such a huge decision to drop to H1 (given the importance of H2 for many university courses), consider enrolling them in crash courses or workshops that could help unravel the many complex concepts for them and give them back their confidence.

How Secondary Math Tuition Can Help Your Child Ace Their Exams?

How Secondary Math Tuition Can Help Your Child Ace Their Exams?

How Secondary Math Tuition Can Help Your Child Ace Their Exams?

Overly-challenging” PSLE Maths questions have been in the spotlight for as long as we can remember! But this bodes a serious question: If PSLE Maths is too “tough”, then what about Secondary O-level Maths? Can Singaporean parents be expected to help guide their children through even more complex topics over the next 4 years? The answer is “probably not”.

So, what can parents looking to help their children ace their Secondary Math syllabus do? Secondary Math Tuition of course!
And here are some simple reasons why it is most helpful for children struggling with the subject:

Secondary Math Tuition Teachers Have Content Mastery Which Parents Don’t

While parents may put in the best efforts in guiding their child, the truth is they do not necessarily have the right content knowledge to impart to the child! This could create frustration while teaching for the parents or result in difficulty in comprehending complex concepts for the child.
If the terms “Algebraic expressions & formulae”, “Trigonometry”, “Indices” or “Logarithms” are giving you nightmarish flashbacks to your schooling days or drawing a blank, then perhaps it is best to leave it to the experts.
Unlike parents, tuition teachers are subject experts who know even the most complex topics like the back of their hand. This allows them to best assess a student’s level of understanding and also help breakdown the topics in the most efficient manner for understanding.

Structured Lessons Provide Effective Skills & Techniques to Answer Questions

When students are struggling with Maths in school, it can be because of several reasons:
1) Topics are covered too quickly
2) Not sufficient guidance is provided

We understand that for difficult topics like such, more guidance is required. Hence to ensure our students are able to maximize their learning with us, at New Dawn Learning Studio, our Secondary math tuition teachers utilize the following teaching approach:

• Lecture based off curated notes (with step-by-step guided solutions) that facilitate understanding of each topic
• Tutorial sessions with practice questions in increasing order of difficulties to practise the newly learnt concepts (with opportunities of interaction with tutor for clarification)
• Summary Sheets – helpful for quick references or revisions
Over time, this guided approach also helps our students build their confidence and reinforces their ability to learn the even tougher topics of the subject!

Tuition Creates Opportunities for Revision and Reinforcement

The move from primary school to secondary school is a big leap – where the learning environments are vastly different.
Not only do students have more in-depth learning required per subject, but there are also a whole lot more subjects to learn about. And not to mention other extra curriculum like CCAs.
Similarly, teachers in secondary school do not have the luxury of time to keep pace with individual learning abilities too, and that is how students can lag behind.
If not addressed, this could snowball into a bigger problem as time progresses – especially in upper secondary when the new topics require solid understanding of the fundamentals. If the fundamentals are weak, students will only face greater struggles to understand concepts as they progress. For example, the knowledge of algebraic expressions and functions introduced in secondary one will be required when they learn about vectors and solving for quadratic equations, graphs and more in upper secondary.
New Dawn Learning’s Secondary A & E Math Tuition classes are structured to allow for this much needed revision and reinforcement:
• Weekly tuition tutorials to re-learn and practice concepts from school
• Quarterly workshops to focus on specific learning needs
• End of year revisions with specially curated practice examination papers to strengthen concept understanding and answering techniques
