Guide to Adapting to a New School

Have you ever heard of people introducing themselves as “ESTJ” or “INFJ” and wondered what exactly these cryptic-sounding letters could possibly mean? Fret not, they are not morse codes or any foreign languages. These so-called “codes” are being categorised under MBTI (Myers–Briggs Type Indicator) types, and these people are referring to their personality types. MBTI is a self-report inventory designed to identify a person’s personality type, strengths, and preferences. There are a total of 16 different personality types in total, and this inventory is one of the most widely used psychological instruments in the world. Simply put, ‘E’ represents someone who is extraverted while ‘I’ means someone who is introverted.

Be it an ‘E’ or an ‘I’, most students still struggle to integrate into their new schools swiftly. The difference in culture, routines and environment inevitably creates barriers students have to overcome when stepping into a brand new environment. Nonetheless, it is, in fact, absolutely normal and understandable to feel anxious or nervous when students first enter their new schools. It can even take as long as months to completely get comfortable with the fresh environment. Having to juggle both academics and social life, students might feel overwhelmed with the immense pressure.

Are you also struggling to adapt to your new school? Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

The very first step is to try befriending more schoolmates in school. It might be a nerve-wrecking move, but it is certainly beneficial as these people are the ones who will keep you going in school and will make a huge difference in your education journey. With a strong and healthy social circle, you will gradually find a secured position and a sense of belonging in your new school, which creates an impetus for you to attend school everyday.

To make your school life much more okay for you, here are four steps called OKAY (an abbreviation) you may consider following.

1. Openness – Open Up to Your Classmates Beyond Classroom Settings

Make it a priority to make more friends in your new school. Break times or recesses are apt opportunities to get to know your classmates better. It sure would be daunting at first, but you can make the first move by asking basic questions such as their previous schools, favourite show, hobbies, talents and more… Asking questions proves that you are engaged and are open to forging new friendships. They can potentially become your pillars of support in your new school. If you are willing to go a step further, exchanging social media accounts keeps one another updated and ensures that there is some form of ‘togetherness’.

2. Keenness – Keep Up with School Events and Join CCAs of Your Interests

Despite the importance of academics, expanding one’s social network is part of every student’s schooling experience. Many alumni claim that clubs and societies highly enriches their school experiences. By joining an event or school CCA of your interest, you get to meet people with common interests and hobbies. This naturally creates more opportunities for conversations, and also makes one feel a sense of belonging in school. Connecting with people with the same interests as you is undeniably one of the best ways to forge strong friendships in new environments.

3. Acknowledgement – Put in Effort to Understand Each Other’s Differences

There are many misconceptions of introverts – they are not antisocial or depressed, they might just have different preferences as compared to the majority. They might simply prefer smaller groups, or just want more personal space. Empathy and being understanding are two important ‘ingredients’ in this ‘secret recipe’ of forging more friendships in school. Being empathetic to others allows others to show concern in the same way to you, and this significantly makes your school life more fulfilling and fruitful.

4. You – Show More Self-Love

By taking care of yourself, you are keeping yourself healthier, both mentally and physically. Believe it or not, this will make adapting to a brand new environment much more manageable. Some ways are having a healthy sleep routine and exercising regularly. Avoid neglecting your usual routines and focus on establishing new ones that are needed in your new education stage.

While we understand that students are racing against time to complete homework and do revision, it is also important to take some time off to unwind and connect with others in school. With true friends surrounding you in school, pillars of support are present everywhere you go – allowing you to stay grounded. Evidently, having a decent social circle is indispensable everywhere you go.

The next question is, where can you hang out with your friends besides school? After familiarising with your new school, what’s next? Where else to go, especially with the COVID-19 situation?
