A Level is a final gateway to the university, and H2 chemistry (surprisingly not biology) is a prerequisite subject for prestigious courses such as medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy. Despite the importance of H2 Chemistry, it is one of the most challenging science subjects with the lowest distinction rate of 38.9%.
H2 Chemistry is organized into two levels: Core ideas and extension topics. Core ideas cover topics like Chemical bonds, Chemical energetics, and Reaction Kinetics, which are interrelated and form the basis upon which further learning and understanding of chemical phenomena and reactions are built. Extensive topics extend into the learning of different chemical systems such as organic compounds and transition metals. A good example is Transition metals, an understanding of concepts of core topics such as Chemical Bonding is extended to the study of transition metals where students learn to appreciate the similarities and differences when comparing with main group metals.

What is H2 JC Chemistry?
H2 JC Chemistry aims to develop students’ understanding of chemical concepts and how these concepts are related to chemistry and to other science disciplines. A key feature in the study of H2 Chemistry is the development of students’ ability to navigate between macroscopic phenomena, microscopic interactions, and symbolic representation to attain a deep conceptual understanding of the behaviors of chemical systems.
It will enable students to extend this way of viewing and thinking about the behaviors of chemical systems to physical and biological phenomena, which are present in many aspects of daily life, e.g. environmental pollution and food science.
Our H2 Chemistry Methodology
When it comes to the JC Chemistry syllabus, difficult topics like Acid-Base equilibrium, Organic Chemistry, and Reaction Kinetics strike fear in the hearts of many students – and for good reason. These are multi-layered and complex topics that require a strong in-depth understanding of the underlying principles to do well in them.
Understanding the challenge students face in Chemistry, our H2 Chemistry tuition classes use a simple yet effective approach:
• Break down the concept to help you understand the underlying principles.
• Use tailored tuition materials which include step-by-step guides and challenging questions to help guide your understanding of the topic in increasing stages of difficulty.
• Provide helpful mind maps to help connect the associations and links between various concepts to unveil the bigger picture
During each H2 Chemistry tuition class, Mr. Joseph breaks down a topic into multiple sections, and each section will go in-depth so as to help students understand the underlying principles behind it. We will dive deep into the mechanism and learn how to apply the concepts that are thoroughly explained in our JC Chemistry tuition classes. This will follow by showing work examples of a topical H2 Chemistry question. Students will be able to develop the ability to deconstruct the mechanism and solve the Chemistry questions.
Practice makes perfect – an inevitable truth when you want to truly master a subject or anything in life. After showing work examples in the JC H2 Chemistry tuition classes, our tutor prepares practice that helps to build up the understanding of the topics, starting from basic questions to building strong fundamentals, to complex questions that required complex analysis. Most critically, our A Level Chemistry tutor is able to provide clear step-by-step explanations for these challenging questions in person, quickly recap relevant concepts, and clarify any doubts you may have along the way. Even though our JC H2 Chemistry tuition lessons are held in group class settings, there is always dedicated time to allow for one-to-one clarifications and follow-ups where required.

The A Level Chemistry syllabus, undeniably, has a lot of content to cover, and generally, students will face challenges in connecting topics and extracting concepts to be used in combination. In the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Chemistry examination, examiners require students to go beyond recalling the content to understand how chemical formulas are derived and apply the gist of every concept.
When tackling a Chemistry question, students would have to identify the topics pertaining to the questions and analytically choose and use the concepts relevant to each topic. The method of answering is not straightforward, and the main role of New Dawn JC Chemistry Tuition is to help students to be able to see the link between the various topics and concepts.
Even though on the surface, the topics are listed separately in the Chemistry MOE syllabus, in actual fact, none of the topics can be studied in isolation. Students will hence feel lost and our A Level Chemistry tutors are there to bring to light how the concepts can be linked effectively to answer the question and also strengthen the students’ scientific knowledge.
There will also be Chemistry concept maps specially created for students in New Dawn JC Chemistry Tuition where all the concepts and key formulas are summarised and succinctly explained. These concept maps will help students understand the key learning objectives at one glance and also allow them to see the connections between topics more clearly.
