In our JC Maths tuition classes, our objective is to address the difficulties commonly encountered by students. Thereby, every lesson is well-structured and delivered systematically to meet the learning needs of the students.

Very often, the lack of comprehensive materials for self-revision is an apparent hindrance to learning Maths. To overcome this problem, we’ve put together tailored and comprehensive study materials for our H2 Math tuition students.

Materials given include one booklet, one formula sheet, and a set of homework with the aim of promoting independent learning.

We also run a module of real-life application as part of our comprehensive Math learning experience.

Annual workshops are organised in June and September for our A-Levels Maths Tuition students to facilitate pre-exam revision and enhance their learning journeys.

 


What is Covered in A-Levels Maths Tuition

The most common subject taken up in JC, H2 Maths is a pre-requisite to all courses in university. It is a build-on to Secondary A Maths and consists of two main areas covered: Pure Maths and Statistics.

In Pure Maths, the sections covered are Functions and Graphs, Sequences and Series, Differentiation and Integration, Vectors, and Complex Numbers. As there are 5 sections in Pure Maths, at New Dawn Learning Studio, our approach for JC1 students who sign up for JC Maths is to advise the concerned student which class to go to so that he or she can learn effectively.

In Statistics, the sections covered are Permutations and Combinations, Probability, Discrete Random Variables, Binomial distribution, Normal distribution, Hypothesis Testing, and Correlation and Regression. These 7 topics are covered sequentially. Hence, at New Dawn Learning Studio, JC2 students who signed up for H2 Math can be allocated to any of the current classes.

To optimise learning outcomes from attending JC Maths tuition at New Dawn Learning Studio, we will also conduct lessons a step ahead of the school delivery. Students will find it easier to follow through with the classes at their respective JCs, thereby maximising their learning capability.

 


H2 Maths Tuition Delivery style

At New Dawn Learning Studio, we believe every student is important, so we place great emphasis on effective delivery to assist students to develop their potential in the subject they wish to improve further. During the H2 Maths lecture, the lecturer will first teach the topic and show the working of solving a typical H2 Maths question, followed by practice on the students’ part, and then leave some time open for interaction before moving on to the next worked example.   • Tutorial

After each lecture, H2 Maths students will be given some time to practice what they have just learned so as to ensure that they fully grasp the concepts of the topic covered and know how to apply them to typical H2 Maths questions. During the tutorial, students can freely interact with their H2 Maths tutor to seek further clarification to enhance their learning.

Homework, though optional but helpful, is given for further practice at home. What is A-Level Maths?

The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A-Level) examination is a nationwide test administered annually in Singapore to school-aged and private applicants.

The GCE A-Level test is jointly administered by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board, the Ministry of Education, and Cambridge Assessment International Education.

Candidates may elect to be assessed on subjects such as Mathematics at three different levels of study – Higher 1 (H1), Higher 2 (H2), or Higher 3 (H3) for school candidates.

 


What are H1, H2, and H3 Maths?

H1, H2, and H3 denote the depth of the subject studied by the student. Higher is denoted by the H in H1, H2, and H3.

Topics classified as H1 are worth one point, whereas subjects classified as H2 are worth two points. H3 subjects are provided ONLY to students who are academically prepared to take extra topics in addition to their H1 and H2 subjects.

Typically, schools determine which students will be “invited” to take H3 topics. Students who pick H3 studies typically desire to differentiate themselves from their peers who have chosen a comparable University course. However, it is critical to remember that the demands of H3 topics are substantial, and if pupils are unable to perform in H3 subjects at A-levels, the strategy may backfire.

To get admitted to the university, you must possess the following minimal subject combinations:

  1. Three H2 subjects with a content focus
  2. One H1-level subject
  3. Compulsory H1 subjects
  • If you did not study higher Chinese at O-levels, you will need to take Mother-Tongue Language (MTL).

H1

General Paper and Project Work are required topics for all students. Additionally, students may substitute Knowledge and Inquiry for General Paper (GP) or Mother Tongue Language and Literature for H2.

Students who have passed their Higher Mother Tongue in Secondary School may be spared from studying H1 Mother Tongue, although it still qualifies as 1 point. Nevertheless, if a student did not finish Higher MTL at the secondary school O-Levels, he or she must pass H1 MTL in JC.

H2

Schools will assess whether or not to provide a student the opportunity to take four H2s, with the decisive element being the student’s raw cut-off points at the time of entry to the JC.

Students may be offered the option of taking four H2 courses rather than the conventional mix of three H2 and one H1.

H3

H3 subjects are not assessed for rank points purposes. They are extra courses taken in addition to their H1 and H2 classes. H3 topics may qualify students for module exemptions at their university, based on the course and module chosen.

H3 subjects are considered an extension of H2 subjects, allowing for greater in-depth study and prominence to advanced information. H3 is not accessible for all subjects.

Academically proficient students may enroll in an extra H1 or H2 topic OR up to two H3 subjects.

 


Which A-Level Mathematics Level Is Most Common?

Key Differences Between H2 Mathematics and Further Mathematics

1. Teaching Style

H2 Math – In most classes, professors take a lot of time in front of their students to lecture about a certain subject. This is what we call a lecture. Students may raise questions during lectures, but the focus of the discussion is mostly on what the lecturer has to say about the material. Attendees are urged to jot down as many notes as they can throughout the class.

H2 Further Math – A class is similar to what you might have experienced in high school: students gather around a table to listen to a professor discuss a specific subject line in depth. Students are naturally encouraged to raise questions and continue the discussion in class.

2. Teaching Pace

H2 Math – For those who will be studying H2 Math, you will go a long way in order to ensure that you comprehend the complex topics taught in H2 Math, such as vectors. This will improve your test results.

H2 Further Maths – Further Maths is a demanding and difficult subject that will help you strengthen your analytical and problem-solving skillset in mathematics at a fast pace. When you choose to study Further Maths, you will learn H2 Maths and H2 Further Maths equating to two levels when combined. You must be able to switch back and forth between different subjects, as they are taught together in a class. What Is an A-Levels Maths Exam Like?

Section A of the H1 Maths exam focuses on Pure Maths topics, whereas Section B focuses on more practical topics (such as Probability and Statistics). The exam is divided into eight sections, each with around eight to ten questions of different lengths and marks, and each section must have at least two problems that apply math to actual-world situations.

Application questions with a minimum weightage of 12 points may require students to synthesise their responses by combining concepts and abilities from other subjects. ‘

In order to graduate with an H2 Maths degree, students must pass two exams. Maths Paper 1 consists of 10-12 questions of different marks and duration, including at least two questions on the application of mathematics to real-world situations.

There will be a total of 12 marks for each application question, which may involve ideas and abilities from many topics.

Sections A and B of Paper 2 are comprised of problems from Pure Maths and Probability and Statistics, respectively. Mathematical reasoning in business and social sciences is addressed in at least two questions in Section B, which comprises a total of roughly 5-8 problems of various lengths and marks.

Application questions with a minimum weightage of 12 points may require students to synthesize responses by combining concepts and abilities from other subjects.

 


Checklist: What Do I Need In An A-Levels Maths Exam?

  • Compass – You may be needed to draw circles or arcs to illustrate constructions.
  • Protractor – To draw angles such as a pie chart.
  • Set Square – This is useful for construction.
  • Ruler
  • Calculator – Make sure it’s a permitted type of calculator and you know how to use.
  • Highlighter – Not required for use on test answer sheets, but in certain exams, it might be good to check out sections of the exam paper as you finish them
  • 3 Blue or Black Pen – You will be writing for several hours; a pen may run out of ink. It could leak. Before you leave the house, put them to the test. If you simply take a few pens from your house that haven’t been used in a long time, they might not work.
  • 2 pencils – It’s better to bring an extra pencil than to waste time sharpening one whose top has broken. HB pencils are used to draw diagrams on graph paper.
  • Coloured Pencils – It is not essential, but it is a good idea to bring three or four different coloured pens or pencils to give sketches and diagrams more visible. Extremely soft lead pencils should not be used since they are more prone to breaking and may not pop out enough on the test response sheet. It is not recommended to utilise markers that might show through to the other side of the page.
  • Pencil Sharpener – For when the tops of all pencils break. You could become overly anxious and press too hard, causing the tops to break.
  • Rubber/Eraser
  • A Watch – If you’re sitting somewhere where you can’t see the clock, wear a watch with hour and minute hands so you can keep track of how much time you spend on each question in comparison to what you planned.
  • Tables and Formulae Book – Keep in mind that you will be able to pick up a copy of the “Tables and Formulae” booklet at the test centre during the examination. If they are not provided to everyone prior to the exam, you should request them as soon as possible.

What is H2 Maths?

H2 Maths includes a broader range of themes than secondary school math, and while some of the concepts may be comparable, there are significant changes in the content taught between the two levels of mathematics.

As explained above, H2 Maths is more concise than H1, whereas H3 Maths are more advanced.
